PM Modi Cheers Gaza Peace Progress, Hails Trump’s Leadership as Hamas Agrees to Hostage Release
In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised US President Donald Trump’s leadership in advancing peace in Gaza. In a post on X, Modi said, “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward.” He added that India would continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.

The praise comes shortly after Hamas agreed to release the last of the Israeli hostages captured during its 2023 attack, following Trump’s 20-point Gaza resolution plan aimed at ending the months-long Israel-Palestine conflict. Trump described Hamas as “ready for a lasting PEACE” and called on Israel to immediately stop bombing Gaza to ensure the hostages’ safe release.
In response to the developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said Israel was preparing for the “immediate implementation” of the first stage of Trump’s plan concerning hostages. Israeli media also reported that the country’s political leadership instructed the military to scale back offensive operations.
However, the ceasefire remains fragile. According to local reports cited by Reuters, Israeli tanks and fighter planes continued bombardments in Gaza City and Khan Younis shortly after Hamas’ statement, hitting residential areas in the Remal neighborhood. No casualties were immediately reported.
Trump further thanked Muslim-majority nations that he credited with assisting in negotiations and pledged that “everybody will be treated fairly” in ongoing discussions. Hamas, while agreeing to the hostage release, indicated that the remaining elements of the US peace plan are still subject to negotiation, leaving uncertainty over the full resolution of the conflict.
